Tyee Atkin (he/him)
I was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon. Growing up in a multicultural household instilled a personal value for global connections that led me to explore my interests in social movements in Latin America and cultural geography in the Arctic at the University of Oregon, where I completed a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and a Minor in Food Studies. Following my bachelor’s degree I helped lead international undergraduate field science courses in Chile, Iceland, New Zealand and Australia, combining my passions for experiential education, backcountry guiding, and intercultural learning. Collaborating with local partner organizations and researchers, the resilience and adaptiveness of communities facing social and environmental challenges that I witnessed reinforced my passion for environmental justice and motivated me to grow as a scholar and activist. I am now pursuing a Master of Arts in Global Studies at UCSB. I am interested in how communities experience and respond to socio-environmental conflicts, particularly in Chile and California. I aspire to strengthen environmental justice networks for sharing resources, strategies and hope across changing local and global landscapes.
