The Global Studies Department, established in 1999, is one of the first interdisciplinary undergraduate majors in international studies in the country to focus on globalization. The major is popular among undergraduates and attracts approximately 900 students from all walks of life.

A Master of Arts program, launched in fall 2006, offers a two-year degree intended to help students develop an understanding of the economic, political, social, and cultural forces that are shaping global organizations. Internationally-recognized faculty teach and mentor graduate students in the growing program, which offers teaching experience and a field internship.  An interdisciplinary Ph.D. emphasis in Global Studies is also available.  In addition, the department's cutting-edge PhD Program is the first of its kind at a Tier-1 Research University in the United States, and the first within the University of California system. It is a stand-alone degree (approximately 5-6 years) and is separate from our highly successful terminal MA in Global Studies. The PhD program in Global Studies provides a unique interdisciplinary degree for students who desire to study global issues such as conflict, immigration, human rights, environment, sustainable development and the challenges these issues present for lasting peace, equality and prosperity.

Support from Alumni and Friends support these endeavors and enrich our programming and student and faculty opportunities to engage in global matters at the highest level in the area. We invite you to be a part of the Program's success in educating the next generation of leaders by making a gift today.

Support the Department of Global Studies

The Global Studies Fund for Excellence

The Global Studies Fund for Excellence plays a crucial role in supporting research, teaching and enhancing the intellectual life of the department. With this Fund, the Department Chair has the flexibility to support important programs and initiatives when other sources of funding are not available or are inadequate to fulfill the need.

Examples of programs and initiatives that may be supported by the Fund include student scholarships, new faculty/student research, conferences, events and priorities that advance the mission and vision of the department. A gift to this Fund has a direct and immediate impact on the Department.

Richard P. Appelbaum Fund in Global Studies

This Fund was established to honor Richard “Rich” Appelbaum, a UC Santa Barbara department of Global and International Studies faculty member of 42 years.  Rich is a pioneering member of the university’s Global and International Studies Department faculty and a founder the MAGIS program. His commitment to improving labor conditions through his academic work and activism is honored by this fund.  The purpose of the fund is to support students participating in the internship portion of the Master’s Program and will provide funding for up to six months to qualified students, with a preference for internships in global labor issues.

How to Give

The UCSB Department of Global Studies brings stellar opportunities for study and research in this still new and exciting discipline. Our world traveled professors include endowed chairs and comprise a renowned interdisciplinary faculty in areas of law, environment, political science, sociology, literature, history, economics, and culture and language.

One of the premier and top programs of its kind, we have over 1,000 undergraduates taking our courses and graduate 300 each year. Our Masters Program has allowed international and domestic internships with such partners as the Clinton Global Initiative and our graduates have secured positions with the State Department, Department of Defense, the World Justice Project, and top schools such as Harvard Law and the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. We have a new PhD program and supplemented with fellowships and research opportunities. Our students work closely with the professors hosting lectures, courses, and workshops with world class scholars and speakers such as Rachel Maddow, Gwen Ilfil, and Ashis Nandy.

We are committed to recruiting and retaining the best and brightest students and world-class scholars, whose positive energy will continue to strengthen every aspect of this cutting edge program. We seek annual, current-use funding and permanent endowments to allow us to:

  • recruit for graduate students
  • designate opportunities for undergraduate scholarship
