Global Studies PhD Graduate Student Sylvia Cifuentes was awarded the Graduate Student Research Award by the Human Dimensions of Global Change (HDGC). As stated in their Spring 2019 Newsletter:

"We will also recognize Sylvia Cifuentes, the winner of the Graduate Student Research Award. Sylvia is a PhD candidate in the Department of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her proposed research titled “Living Forests: A Multi-Scale Analysis of Indigenous Knowledge(s) and Ontologies in a Pan-Amazonian Climate Initiative” will investigate how multiple indigenous knowledges and ontologies—from over 400 different indigenous ethnic groups—are negotiated and articulated into the Amazon Indigenous Initiative to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation. In her research, Sylvia will analyze human-environment relationships at different levels of spatial aggregation to understand a dynamic and nuanced multi-scaled indigenous governance system and its implications for forest conservation and local livelihoods."

Congratulations, Sylvia!
