Dr. Karim is associate professor of anthropology and associate director of the Center for the Study of Women in Society (CSWS) at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Her research interests are in globalization, gender, human rights, and social movements. She has published many scholarly articles in anthropology journals, and chapters in edited volumes, and readers on South Asia. Her research has been supported with two postdoctoral fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and grants from the National Science Foundation, Fulbright Foundation, Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. Dr. Karims forthcoming book is entitled Microfinance and Its Discontents: Women in Debt in Bangladesh, and is being published through the University of Minnesota Press (Spring 2011). She is currently engaged in three research projects: one is on the Tabligh Jamaat movement on which her paper today is based. Her second project is an ethnography of women survivors of acid violence in Bangladesh, and the third is on the cultural politics of the Asian Highway.
