AFRICA & THE MIDDLE EAST

The ruins of Tulum on the Caribbean beach, Mexico

The rising Muslim politics in Northern Africa and the Middle East are not of a single dimension. Though outsiders often focus their attention on violent extremists, the pattern of religious involvement in public life in the region is much more complicated. This diversity has become even more apparent since the Arab Spring uprisings across the region in 2011. Religious institutions and activists are involved at every level of society, including education, health services, and political movements, with varying degrees of responsiveness to international efforts to assist in the regions social and economic development.
