The ruins of Tulum on the Caribbean beach, Mexico

The South and Southeast Asian region is among the most religiously diverse in the world. It contains the largest Hindu population (in India and Nepal), the largest Theravada Buddhist area (including Sri Lanka and Thailand), and the largest Muslim countries in the world (Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh). In the countries dominated by each of these religions, powerful political forces with religious connections have in recent years altered the social landscape, increasing tensions between religion and religion, and between religion and secular authorities.
