Elizabeth Fuller Collins is a Professor in the Department of Classics and World Religions and the Program in Southeast Asian Studies at Ohio University. In addition to directing the Southeast Asian Studies Program (1999-2002) and serving as interim director of the International Development Studies Program (2003-2004), she has led two projects in Indonesia. The first on Conflict Management and Democratic Dialogue was conducted in partnership with the Center for Research on Inter-group Relations and Conflict Resolution (CERIC) in the Faculty of Social and Political Science at the University of Indonesia, funded by the U.S. State Department. The second on Civic Education and Comparative Religion conducted in partnership with the National Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah in Jakarta was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. She is the author of Pierced by Murugan’s Lance: Ritual, Power, and Moral Redemption Among Malaysian Hindus (1997), Indonesia Betrayed: How Development Fails (2007) and articles on Islamic movements in Indonesia. While working in Indonesia she helped to found Yayasan Nurani Dunia, an Indonesian NGO that works with victims of social and natural disaster and with corporations and communities in participatory projects building and supporting schools and community education centers. She is presently working on a book entitled Ritual and Rule: Religion in Southeast Asia, a historical overview of the religious traditions that have played a major role in shaping the political institutions and societies of the region. Part III of the book “Religion in a Global World Order: Reform and Revival,” focuses on the transnational religious reform and revival movements that have emerged since World War II and their impact on politics in different countries.
