Teaching

The core program in Sikh and Punjab Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara is comprised of three components:

  • Punjabi Language
This serves as the foundation of the program and the courses are offered at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels.
  • History and Culture of the Punjab
The courses trace the history and culture of the of the region by situating the related developments within the larger context of the cultures of India, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
  • Sikhism
A set of undergraduate and graduate courses reconstruct the evolution of the Sikh tradition from its inception in the sixteenth century to the present times.

In the years ahead, we hope to expand our course offerings by inviting distinguished visiting faculty and creating opportunities for advanced graduate students to teach courses in the area of their research.

In addition to the teaching provided in the above areas, the Center for Sikh and Punjab Studies also provides Punjabi Language Proficiency Certifications. Please click on Outreach above for more information about this service.
