Gharib Das, master Punjabi drummer and folk dance teacher, returned to UCSB for a round of lectures and workshops. In the Ethnomusicology Forum the details he shared of his 50-year professional career as a dholi read as a history of the development of East Punjab’s cultural promotion endeavors since Independence. He was a guest presenter in the Music of Punjab seminar, where students were treated to Gharib Das’ demonstration of the multifarious dhol rhythms that at one time were linked to specific functions of Punjabi life. In addition, three open workshops on folk dances were led by the master. Finally, the Center recorded Garib Dass’ performance of near-forgotten songs and rhythms.
