Tentative Syllabus:

1. Punjabi (9: 00-11: 00)

Elementary Punjabi (M-F 9: 00-11: 00) 25X2=50 hours

Week 1. The Gurmukhi Script and Punjabi phonology
Week 2. Tones, Greetings, personal pronouns, the simple verb
Week 3. Nouns, adjectives, interrogatives, and post positions
Week 4. Numbers, Dates, and the Oblique Case

Travel week

Week 6. Review after travel week, Habitual tense, Evaluation Session

Advanced Punjabi (M-F 9: 00-11: 00) 25X2=50 hours

Week 1. The Gurmukhi Script and Punjabi phonology
Week 2. Short Stories: Mohan Bhandari and Sukhwant Kaur
Week 3. Short Stories: Ajit Kaur and Afzal Ihsan Randhawa
Week 4. Selections from Vanjara Bedi and Giani Gurdit Singh

Travel week

Followed by a visit to Jama Masjid, Sector 22-A, to observe the nimaz.

1-4. Gharib Das, a reknowned dholi and bhangra master, will teach Punjabi folk singing and dancing

Week 3.

3. Fiction - Gurdial Singh, writer
4. Translation - Rana Nayar, Panjab University

Week 4.

4. The weekend travels will include visits to the following places:

1. Saturday: Kharar, Naina Devi, Anandpur, Kiratpur

Sunday: Sirhind (Mata Chakreshwari Devi Jain temple, Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, and Dargah of Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi), Archaeological museums and sites at Sanghol and Ropar

2. Saturday: Bhaini Sahib, Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, Malerkotla

Sunday: Manakpur Sharif, the Mughal Gardens, Pinjore, Kalka

3. Saturday: OFF

Sunday: Paunta, Nahan, Renuka Devi/ Kapalmochan

4. Saturday: OFF

Sunday: Guru Nanak Mission Hospital, Banga, Palahi (Phagwara), Jalandhar (Ghadar Museum, the Adi Dharam Center), Suranasi (Mission School), Beas (The Radha Soamis)/Kapurthala, Goindwal, and Amritsar

Monday: Amritsar (G.N.D.U., Khalsa College, Alexandra School, Art Gallery, Jallianawala Bagh, Durgiana Mandir, Darbar Sahib (Langar)

Tuesday: OFF. The Vagha Border at 5.30 pm

Wednesday: Fategarh Churian, Dehra Baba Nanak, Dhianpur, Lunch at Baring College, Batala, Qadian (the Ahmadiyahs), Pathankot, and Dharamsala

Thursday: OFF

Friday: Norbulingka Institute, Chinmaya Mission, Chamunda Devi, Baijnath, Andhreta

5. Saturday: Kangra Fort (Adi Nath Jain temple), Masroor, Jawalamukhi (Lunch), Dehra Baba Vadbhag Singh, Chandigarh

Sunday: OFF

6. Saturday: Departure for Delhi
