Anthropology 104H. People, Poverty, and Environment in Central America-Stonich 
Cross-listed with Environmental Studies 104. 
Analysis of the interrelated social, demographic, economic, political, and environmental crises occurring in Central America from an anthropological perspective. Emphasis is on the evolution of contemporary problems, current conditions, and future prospects for the region. 

History 151W. Women in Latin American History-Cline 
A survey of the historical role of women in Latin America from the prehispanic period to the present. 

History 154LA. Nationalisms and Identities in the Andes, I-Mendez 
Inca and Spanish symbols of prestige and power played a major role in the formation of social, cultural, and ethnic identities in colonial Andean societies. These will be analyzed in their various cultural and artistic representations. 

History 154LB. Nationalisms and Identities in the Andes, II-Mendez 
The formation of nationalist discourses in the Andean republics with special attention to the uses and representations of Inca past--and Indian present. Emphasis on Peru but comparisons with Bolivai and Ecuador should emerge from discussions. 

History 156 A and B. History of Mexico-Cline 
B. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Independence, the age of Santa Anna, the Reform, Porfiriato, the Mexican Revolution, modern politics, and the economy of the 1970's. 

History 156I. Indians of Colonial Mexico-Cline 
History of Colonial Nahuas, particularly focusing on indigenous sources in translation. 

History 158A. History of Christianity in Latin America-Cline 
A survey of Christianity in early Latin America: an examination of issues surrounding conversion of native peoples; establishment of the church as an institution; social issues regarding the church (race, class, gender); the church as an economic institution; the Inquisition and the regulation of social mores. 

History 158B. History of Christianity in Latin America-Cline 
A survey of post-independence Christianity: institutional changes due to political independence; role of the church in Latin American politics; liberation theology; rise of evangelical Protestantism.

Examines significant instances of economic political, cultural and social change in contemporary Latin America. Employs various perspectives to illuminate such phenomena as changing social structures, industrialization, social movements, the state, multinationals, the military and international pressures.

A. Reading and discussion of novels and short stories by Borges, Carpentier, Cortazar, Garcia Marquez, Vargas Llosa, and others. 
B. Reading and discussion of representative works of contemporary Mexican authors, including Yanez, Rulfo, Fuentes, and others. 

Spanish 127. Latin American Cinema-Fuentes, Marchant 
Study in English of Latin American films of the past forty years both as an art medium and as a document of a changing society. Special attention paid to the work of the new generation of directors. When applicable, the relationship between a literary work and its film adaptation will be studied. 

Spanish 177. Spanish-American Culture-Marchant 
Leading social, institutional, intellectual, and artistic trends from the sixteenth century to the present. 

Spanish 178. Mexican Culture-Perissinotto 
Social, institutional, intellectual and artistic trends in the development of modern Mexico. 

Spanish 180. Mexican Civilization (in English Translation) -Perissinotto 
Social, institutional, intellectual and artistic trends in the development of modern Mexico. Taught in English. 

Spanish 185. The Spanish-American Nueva Novela-Levine 
Readings of such authors as Borges, Rulfo, Fuentes, Vargas Llosa, Garcia Marquez, Donoso. Emphasis put on the innovative structure and language brought to Hispanic literature by the so-called nueva novela. 

Spanish 194. Spanish American Women's Writing-Marchant 
An introduction to nineteenth- and twentieth- century Spanish American women's writings. Themes may include women's participation in the formation of national literatures, their engagement with a tradition of women's writing, and issues of authorship and authority. 

Portuguese 128AA-ZZ. Luso-Brazilian Cinema-Marchant 
Portuguese and Brazilian films of the past forty years both as an art medium and as a document of changing society. Topic or author to be chosen by faculty member. Each course on a different topic. Taught in English.
