JUERGENSMEYER ADDRESSES CLUB de MADRID
August 2006
Mark Juergensmeyer gave the keynote address for a meeting of the Club de Madrid in the resort city of Santander, Spain, on August 21. He spoke on "Terrorism and Democracy."
The Club de Madrid consists of former heads of state. Mary Robinson, former Prime Minister of Ireland and former UN Commissioner for Human Rights, and Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada, served as co-conveners of the meeting in Spain. Other participants in the meeting included Lionel Jospin, former Prime Minister of France, and Sadiq al-Mahdi, former Prime Minister of Sudan.
The meeting at Santander follows a large international conference on terrorism and democracy that was held in Madrid on March 11 2005 on the anniversary of the train bombings in 2004. Juergensmeyer was the coordinator of a group of experts who participated in the event and created a set of policy recommendations on ways of combatting terrorism without diminishing democracy and human rights. Results of the meeting will be published by the Club de Madrid. Policy recommendations for governments will also be developed.
