Founded in 2000 as a UK charity, the World Faiths Development Dialogue (WFDD) grew from a series of conversations between religious and secular development leaders who saw many untapped opportunities for partnerships to combat poverty and promote equity. Now based in Washington, D.C., WFDD supports dialogue and fosters research on religion and development, with formal relationships to the World Bank, Georgetown University, and many faith-inspired institutions. In 2002 in Canterbury, England and in 2005 in Dublin, Ireland, in partnership with the World Bank, WFDD convened two summits of the world's faith and secular development leaders, led by Lord George Carey, then Archbishop of Canterbury, and James D. Wolfensohn, then President of the World Bank. At the Canterbury Meeting, Brizio Biondi-Morra, President of the Avina Foundation, captured the spirit of WFDD, noting "to reach a scale that offers real progress, we need to collaborate in unconventional ways."
