The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the humanitarian relief and development agency of the United Methodist Church. UNMCOR was inspired on April 26, in 1940, during a meeting of the General Conference of The Methodist Church by retired Bishop Herbert Welch in view of the horrific violence of World War II. With a budget of nearly $200 Million, UMCOR currently has relief missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Haiti, Albania, Liberia, Armenia, Sudan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. It has programs active in over 100 countries varying from health to world hunger and poverty. Sam W. Dixon is the current deputy general secretary and heads a staff of over 1,000 individuals. UMCOR technically operates within the aegis of the General Board of Global Ministiries of the United Methodist Church.
