A worldwide non-profit grassroots movement, operating in more than 90 countries, HFHI was founded in 1976 with the goal of providing simple, decent and affordable shelter to those in need, regardless of background, race or religion. With headquarters in Americus and Atlanta, Georgia, HFHI’s policy is determined by an ecumenical, international board of directors who are willing to partner with governments, provided that “...these partnerships do not limit our ability to demonstrate the love and teachings of Jesus Christ, and further provided that affiliates do not become dependent or controlled by government funds or other funding sources.” Affiliates are requested to tithe (a donation of 10 percent of their respective contributions,) to support house building in other nations.  In 2001, $9.04 million was provided through this program in the spirit of Christian partnership.  In all, HFHI is responsible for more than 225,000 houses built around the world, providing 1million people with shelter.

Programs/Projects:
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses. Habitat for Humanity's work is accomplished at the community level by affiliates -- independent, locally run, nonprofit organizations. Each affiliate coordinates all aspects of Habitat home building in its local area -- fund raising, building site selection, partner family selection and nurturing, house construction and mortgage servicing. Habitat for Humanity's new Cars for HomesTM vehicle donation program provides another way in which individuals can contribute to the local and global mission of Habitat while potentially qualifying for a tax deduction. In particular, net proceeds generated from donated cars, trucks, boats, RVs, motorcycles or other vehicles through this program are used by local affiliates and Habitat for Humanity International to build homes with low-income families within the community and throughout the world.

Budget: $176 million
