Catholic Relief Services started in 1943, helping resettle war refugees in Europe. CRS is the official international relief and development agency of the U.S. Catholic community, and hopes to bring this community together in global solidarity through its efforts in 98 countries throughout the world. CRS approaches emergency relief and long-term development holistically, in an effort to ensure that all people, but especially the poorest and most vulnerable, have access to basic necessities, health care and education. CRS attention is focused upon six key areas: emergencies, hunger, education, health, peace and domestic concerns- all of which “...ensure that the local population is the central participant in its own [sustainable] development.” Ken Hackett is President of CRS, which allocated 94 % of its expenditures last year to international programs. The organization also recently received a $3.9 million grant from the Gerald and Henrietta Rauenhorst Foundation.
