Catholic Medical Mission Board is a 501 (c) (3) organization in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, founded in 1928 and rooted in the healing” ministry of Jesus. CMMN works collaboratively with local partners to provide quality healthcare programs and services- free of discriminative practices- to people in need around the world; in 2006 CMMB has sent 286 medical professionals to work as volunteers in 32 countries. A CMMB-sponsored study, Faith in Action, in 2005 provided the first-ever qualitative study of the contribution made by faith-based organizations to the global struggle against HIV and AIDS. John F. Major Projects/Programs:
AIDSRELIEF CMMB, together with Catholic Relief Services,
the University of Maryland Institute of Human Virology,
Interchurch Medical Assistance and Futures Group, CMMB
will provide treatment and programs valued at $25 million
for the consortium's first year to 14,900 HIV/AIDS patients
in nine countries: South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya,
Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Haiti, and Guyana. Over five
years, this program could distribute as much as $335
million in treatment to 137,600 patients and provide
infrastructure support to approximately 203 facilities.
CHOOSE TO CARE: attempts to build community-based solutions
to the AIDS pandemic and to alleviate suffering in the
hardest hit areas of southern Africa. To date, Choose
to Care has helped build the capacity of more than 140
community-based organizations focused on comprehensive
prevention, care and support programs that have met the
needs of more than 144,000 patients and orphans BORN
TO LIVE attempts to reduce the risk of mother-to-child-HIV
transmission and to provide quality care and support
for mothers and their babies. Asof May 2004, there are
56 Born to Live sites at partner clinics and hospitals,
where between 3,600-3,800 women are tested for HIV each
month. ACTION FOR FAMILY HEALTH/ACCION POR LA SALUD FAMILIAR
CMMB aims to help reduce the mortality and morbidity
rates of children in five Latin American and Caribbean
countries, through a partnership with the Pan American
Health Organization, the Catholic healthcare networks
and the ministries of health in each country. Has integrated
healthcare programs that treat respiratory infections,
diarrhea, malnutrition, prenatal complications and mother-to-child
transmission of HIV/AIDS that are being established at
208 sites to benefit 589,689 children. BACK TO HAITI
a major public health initiative to support the creation
of quality healthcare programs for mothers and children
in Haiti. Has established primary healthcare and life
skills training services at ten schools run by Salesian
sisters serving approximately 10,000 students TB-DOTS
Established in 1999, CMMB's TB-DOTS program in MOnze,
Zambia at the local level has now become a model used
for nationwide implementation. The program includes:
provision of medicine, training, lab equipment, church/community
volunteers and diagnostic tools for the treatment of
tuberculosis. NUESTRO PASO POR HONDURAS In a three-year
partnership with the Catholic University in Tegucigalpa,
Honduras, CMMB's Nuestro Paso Por Honduras (Our Path
Through Honduras) program is establishing primary healthcare
clinics to increase access to health services for women
and children GLOBAL INITIATIVES recruits and places medical
volunteers, medicine and medical supply shipments, provides
emergency relief and training grants for in-country primary
healthcare workers in more than 100 countries.
