Launched in July 2000 by the United States Institute of Peace, The Religion and Peacemaking Initiative became an official program in 2005. Its main aim is to encourage faith-based peace initiatives in otherwise intractable conflicts. The program supports interfaith reconciliation in Sudan, Nigeria, Israel/Palestine, Iraq, and Macedonia. It also promotes meaningful discussion on Islamic reform in Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. The initiative has also produced a wide array of research findings and publications, including books on Sri Lanka, Ukraine, and Islamic activism. The program has David Smock as its associate vice-president. While the program itself has no funds delegated specifically for religious initiatives it does “alert faith-based organizations to opportunities for peacemaking initiatives, and put organizations in touch with experts and other organizations that can be helpful to them in their peacemaking work.”
