Created in 1985, the Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs at Boston University (CURA), has molded itself into “a center for research, publication and education on one of the most strategic questions in the contemporary world: How does culture (in the sense of beliefs, values and lifestyles) affect economic and political developments world-wide?” The Institute sponsors approximately ten projects that run in unison, daeling with issues from Cross-National inter-religious toleration to spiritual narratives in everyday life and holds both annual and monthly seminars on the role of religion and culture in world affairs. Current projects include research on Islam and Civil Democracy in the Middle East, the Rise of Religion in China, Churches in Africa, and Orthodoxy in Russia. Previous projects have resulted in almost 100 books that encompass all aspects of culture, religion, and world affairs.Peter Berger is the current director and Robert Hefner is the associate director.
