Founded in 1999, by Douglas Johnston, the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy (ICRD) looks to “serve as a bridge between religion and politics in preventing and resolving conflicts in various parts of the world”. The identity-based conflicts that the ICRD addresses are widespread, and the center has programs in Pakistan, Kashmir, Sudan, Iran, the United States, Afghanistan, and Syria. The organization’s income in 2006 was nearly 900,000 dollars. By comparison, a 6 – 10 year commitment to reform Pakistani madrasa with the aim of “securing a better future for the children of Pakistan, enhancing global security, and reducing the sources of discord between Pakistan and the West” will cost nearly $2 million ($558,000 was raised in 2005).
