Created in March 2006 with a grant from William R. Berkley and under the direction of Thomas Banchoff, the Berkley Center is at the heart of a university-wide effort to build knowledge about religion’s role in world affairs and “...promote interreligious understanding in the service of peace.” Through research, teaching, and outreach activities, the BC explores the intersection of religion with four global challenges: diplomacy and transnational relations, democracy and human rights, global development and interreligious dialogue. Funded by a two-year grant from the Henry Luce Foundation’s Initiative on Religion and International Affairs, the BC held a symposium entitled Faith-Inspired NGO’s and Development in April of 2007, followed in November by a second symposium focused on the role of faith-based organizations in development policy in Muslim- majority developing countries.
