Financial Support

To be eligible for fellowships and teaching assistantships, applicants must have distinguished academic records. Notification of financial awards are sent out by mid-March, at the same time as the notification of admission decisions.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek out national, governmental, and foundation fellowships, scholarships, grants, and loans that can be applied to study at any university. Information about these may be obtained by writing directly to individual agencies and foundations. The financial aid office at most colleges and universities provides advice about these extramural funding sources. In addition, the UCSB Graduate Division maintains a website that contains funding source information (http://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/financial/).

Student body diversity contributes greatly to a broader education for all students. The UCSB Graduate Division continues to pursue the goals of increasing the excellence and diversity of the graduate training programs at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The quality of the intellectual and social experience of graduate training is enhanced by the participation of students with the widest variety of perspectives and experiences. Specific fellowships are offered to qualified individuals meeting the eligibility criteria who are from cultural, linguistic, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds not adequately represented in the graduate student population.

Non-resident Tuition Fellowships

All applications submitted by students who are not residents of the state of California are automatically considered for a limited number of out-of-state fellowships. No separate application is required. These fellowships are awarded on the basis of exceptional academic excellence, and they may be awarded separately or occasionally in conjunction with a teaching assistantship.

Orfalea Fellowships

The G&IS Program awards a limited number of fellowships each year to entering MA students from the Orfalea funds provided for the program. Students do not apply for these fellowships. Rather, all applicants will be considered eligible, and awards will be made at the time that the applications are reviewed. The selection will be based on a variety of criteria, including potential promise and academic excellence.

Teaching Assistant Criteria

The Global & International Studies Program allows any graduate student to apply for a position as a teaching assistant in the program. The selection process involves a variety of criteria, including academic excellence. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and have fewer than 12 units of incomplete grades to be eligible for teaching assistantships. In addition, all students whose native language is not English must pass an Oral English Language Exam prior to becoming a teaching assistant.

Reader Criteria

The Global & International Studies Program allows any graduate student to apply for a position as a reader. The selection process involves a variety of criteria, including academic excellence. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and have fewer than 12 units of incomplete grades to be eligible. Readers will be paid on an hourly basis according to the published salary scales. Graduate Student Readers must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and must have taken and received at least a “B” in the course (or equivalent) in which they are serving. Graduate Student Readers must work a minimum of 100 hours during a quarter in order to be eligible for partial fee remission.

Additional Employment Opportunities

marker Some opportunities exist for part-time work on campus. Many of these jobs relate to the students' academic interests. For example, the Associated Students Notetaking Service hires graduate students to take lecture notes in a wide variety of classes. Applications are made in person to the A.S. Notetaking Service, University Center, Room 1531 on campus, (805) 893-4471.

marker The Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS) recruits graduate students as tutors, especially for introductory, methods, and statistics courses. Applications may be made in person to CLAS, Student Resource Building (SRB) 3210.

marker Occasionally, Teaching Assistant (TA) employment is offered through other academic departments and programs. The Asian American Studies Department, Chicana/o Studies, Environmental Studies, Film Studies, Law and Society, Women's Studies, and the Writing Program departments often solicit TAs from the graduate programs of other departments.

marker The campus Human Resources Office, located the 3101 SAAB Building, posts jobs on their website, many of which are part-time and suitable for graduate students. In addition, Career Services, located in Building 599, lists other clerical, food service, and nonacademic opportunities.

marker Graduate students with an MA occasionally find employment teaching classes at nearby community colleges such as Ventura College, Oxnard College, Santa Barbara City College, and Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria.

marker Graduate students may find a variety of other part-time jobs in the Santa Barbara and Goleta community. Some of these positions require no special skills; others call for sophisticated knowledge in data analysis, computer programming, evaluation research, grant writing, etc.
