Global 231: Theories of Intercultural Understanding [Gunn] [4 units]

Introduction to the theories and concepts required for better understanding
the importance of culture in shaping ethical, political, economic, and
social behavior, including an exploration of the challenges of cross-
and inter-cultural interpretation and translation.
Global 232A: Contemporary Issues [Appelbaum] [1 unit] [R 3:30-6:20 pm;
SSMS 2011]
This course is taken by all first-year students during fall quarter.
It focuses on issues of practical and professional concern to MAG&IS
students, including seminar discussions with visiting faculty and practitioners.
Global 233: Transnational Forces and Political Systems [Juergensmeyer]
[4 units] [T 3:30-6:20 pm; SSMS 2011]
An exploration of global trends in the post-Cold War world and the rise
of global civil society in response to population mobility and diasporas,
the erosion of national cultures and political authority, global communications
media, transnational environmental issues, international drug and sex
trade, and the rise of antiglobal protest and religious conflict.
Global 237 Global Organizations and Civil Society [Clémençon]
[4 units] [W 3:30-6:20 pm; SSMS 2011]
A basic understanding of the development of global organizations, from
multinational corporations to global civil society. The course covers
the history of governmental organizations and the changing features of
NGOs.

Global 230: Research Methods in Global & International Affairs [McCarty] [4 units] M 330-620 SSMS 2011
An introduction to basic research skills required in the policy- and decision-making undertaken in international organizations, drawing on a variety of methodologies. The course introduces students to the basic research approaches, drawing on a variety of research methodologies.
Global 232B: Contemporary Issues [Appelbaum] [1 unit] (Optional) R 200-330 SSMS 2011
This course is taken by all first-year students during winter quarter. It focuses on issues of practical and professional concern to MAG&IS students, including seminar discussions with visiting faculty and practitioners.
Global 234: Microeconomics for Global Studies [Mehta] [4 units] TR 300-445 in SSMS 2011 Globalization has involved an expansion in the role played by markets. This course focuses on how markets work, what they are and are not expected to achieve, and what this means for policy. Principles and tools for diagnosing economic problems are taught through application to policy debates.
Global 235: Organizational Policy and Management [Tighe] [4 units] W 330-620 SSMS 2011 (may move to Direct Relief office)
A foundational understanding of organizational theories, including scholarship on international management and leadership, that focuses on the challenges facing organizations in a rapidly-globalizing world.
Second year students:
Global 251: Post-Internship Project/Thesis Preparation [Walker] [4 units] T 900-1150 SSMS 2011
Group projects to develop students’ internships/study abroad experiences into viable projects or theses. To provide an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program, working through stages of data organization and analysis, and writing up final results.
Globl 262MG Special Topics in Film and/or Media Globalization [Curtin] [4 units] R 400-650 pm SSMS 2317 (Cross-listed with FLMST)
This seminar explores three questions: Where in the world do screen media come from? Where do they circulate? And what does this tell us about relations of power between various groups and societies? Case studies include Hollywood, Mumbai, Lagos, and Dubai.

Global 292MD Special Topics: The Moral Dimension of Philanthropy and Social Action [Karoff] [4 units] W 200-450 RobGym (?)
The seminar will explore the sea change in the practice, role and scale of philanthropy and civil society organizations. These trends – some driven by donors, some by governments, some by the market economy and some by the expectations of society - are significantly impacting the field of philanthropy.
Global 243: Development Theories and Strategies [Nedeveen] [4 units] (elective) W 300-550 SSMS 2001
Trends in development thinking and policy over time, from classical political economy through modernization theory, dependency theory, alternative development, neoliberalism, human development, post-development, culture & development; ongoing challenges such as globalization, methodologies such as discourse analysis, and 21st century dilemmas and futures.

Global 236: Macroeconomics, Trade and Development [Mehta]
[4 units]
This course covers basic concepts and theories in macro, international and development
economics, and surveys empirical work to demonstrate the evidentiary base upon
which assertions must be drawn.
Global 238 Global Governance and World Order [Falk] [4 units]
An exploration of various solutions to the challenge of providing global governance
for world order, including the changing role of sovereign states, as well as
the emerging roles of regional actors, international institutions, NGOs, globalizing
market forces, international law and morality, religious movements, and geopolitical
ambitions.
Global 239 Internship Preparation [Mohanty] [4 units]
Pre-internship/study abroad preparation course using various research skills
on activities relating to the internship experience. Topics will include setting
internship goals, managing expectations, special issues in NGOs, and to produce
a work plan for initial stages of the internship and a draft version proposal
of the project/thesis.
Second year students:
Global 250: Managing Development Organizations, Non-Profits and other
NGOs: Theory and Practice [Staff] [4 units] (Optional)
The practical application of organizational theories to the non-profit
sector and global civil society, particularly organizations concerned with
grassroots or sustainable development.
Global 292EP: Global Environmental Policy [Elver] This
course is intended to provide a balance between practice and theory, law and
policy, and traditional and non-traditional approaches to global environmental
politics (GEP).
