MASTER OF ARTS IN
GLOBAL & INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
Candidate Profiles
Jennifer Barnette
Jennifer earned her B.A. in International Studies from the University
of Miami in 2007. Her early undergraduate research focused primarily on
Latin America and was complemented by studying abroad in Mexico, Costa
Rica, and Argentina. She also worked as the International Associate for
the non-profit, Youth Crime Watch of America, where she assisted in bringing
delegations from Panama, Colombia, Brazil, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Haiti
to the annual Youth Crime Prevention Conference.
One of the highlights of Jennifer’s undergraduate career was circumnavigating the world on Semester at Sea. Living on a cruise ship with 700 other students and waking up in a new port every other week was a surreal experience that had a lasting impact on Jennifer. After visiting Egypt and Turkey, she became particularly interested in the concept of nationalism, the development of religious and ethnic tensions, and theories of conflict resolution, which continue to be her primary research interests today. Upon graduation, Jennifer backpacked through Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, where she ended up working at a hostel in Tallinn, Estonia. Her months in Tallinn sparked an interest in the tension between ethnic Russians and ethnic Estonians and she would like to examine that conflict (and similar ethnic clashes in the post-Soviet states) during her internship/study abroad. She is currently learning Russian and hopes to study in Moscow next year.
