MASTER OF ARTS IN
GLOBAL & INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Candidate Profiles
MAGIS Candidates, 2007 - 2009

Jamie PogueJamie Pogue

Jamie Pogue earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from San Francisco St. University in Humanities. She is an intrepid traveler, voracious reader and avid hiker.

In 2003, Jamie spent a year in South Korea teaching English and fulfilling her long-time dream of living in a non-western country. After coming back to the US she earned her teaching credential and taught for three more years.  And in the summer of 2006, Jamie was selected to participate in a teacher-training seminar in Jordan with the Center for Middle East Studies at UC Santa Barbara. While there she decided the time was right to return to for graduate studies.  This program and her experiences abroad ignited a passion in her to study more deeply and consider the complexities of global societies and cultures.

Jamie is very excited to join the MAGIS program. She is happily looking forward to spending the next two years reading, focusing her studies on the Middle East and continuing to learn Arabic, Insha'Allah.

The Middle East and Africa is among the largest source, transit and destination regions for migrants and refugees in the world. This has lead Jamie to Cairo to spend the 2008/2009 academic year doing the Education Abroad Program (EAP) at the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies at the American University in Cairo, Egypt.  In the midst of conflict, education is often seen as a luxury for refugees who are also struggling for food and shelter. But education is not a luxury; it is a basic right that is vital in restoring hope and dignity to people driven from their homes. Jamie will be involved in educational initiatives that help refugees get back on their feet and build a better future.
