Nicolás
Pascal
Nicolás Pascal finagled a degree in history from U.C. Santa Barbara after manipulating a gum wrapper, wooden splint, piece of twine and a Jet Blue visa card- it was quite a rush. He (pre)supposes that there was some coursework involved as well, including a thesis that explored the effects of foreign molestation within the Chilean political sphere throughout the 1960s and early 1970s.
Graduation, an extended period of foreign travel- which included a year living in Spain- and a volunteer effort teaching children through Americorps' Applecorps program have served to heighten Nico's desire to be a global citizen. In order to better hone this sense (of both identity and purpose,) Nico is now in the Global and International Studies Program, interested in learning as much as possible about our community with special emphasis on exploring and contributing to the field of international justice. Nico wrote this paragraph himself- for free. Just to give you an idea of what you're dealing with.
Nicolás enjoyed an extended graduate internship
with the Americas Division of Human
Rights Watch, where he researched human rights issues in Latin America,
with particular attention paid to México and Bolivia, including
research on drug cartels in México, the constitutional referendum
and recall initiative in Bolivia.
He also took a position in Cochabamba as a researcher with the Andean Information Network, analyzing the the political climate in Bolivia. Upon returning to Santa Barbara, Nicolás organized and coordinated the local branch of an international campaign to end the use of child soldiers for Human Rights Watch, traveling to the United Nations headquarters in New York City to help present collected petitions to Ban ki Moon. He also founded and is the advisor to the Human Rights Group at UCSB.
