Candidate Profiles
Kate
Ferroggiaro
Kate is quite grateful to have received her B.A with honors in Communication from the University of Hawaii at Hilo on the Big Island in 2005. Although deeply fascinated by anthropology, world religions, and political science, she chose communication for its vital yet often overlooked role in any worldly realm of interaction.
As a graduate candidate, Kate has many hopes for how much new information she can fill her brain with. With any luck, this information might include: the causes and forces that create poverty and some possible solutions for how they can be reckoned with in new ways, how to bring human rights abusers to justice, in which ways NGOs are most effective both in protecting people and in interacting with governments, and lastly- indigenous cultures and traditional ways of life and how to preserve both. In addition, she hopes that her journey through this program will help narrow her interests for both career and thesis purposes.
For the summer and fall of 2008 Kate is interning with the International Rescue Committee in Washington DC at their Government Relations and Advocacy office. For the most part, she will focus on refugee situations in Sudan, Chad, DRC, Somalia and Northern Uganda. She will also be involved in the IRC's work addressing Gender-Based Violence. At times, she may collaborate with other interns who focus on health issues specific to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Burma.
For years Kate has dreamed of working in various parts of the world including Africa, and feels a close connection with the people of Tibet, with whom one day she would love to spend time with. Kate lives for the great outdoors, practicing yoga, taking pictures, being near water, finding new music, and going to shows.
