Kathryn FarquharKathryn Farquhar

Born in San Diego, California, Kathryn Farquhar attended Vassar College, New York, for her undergraduate work in political science and women’s studies.  While at Vassar, she had the opportunity to spend her junior year living in Dublin while attending Trinity College.

Her academic interests lie at the intersection of politics and women’s studies. She is specifically interested in the positions women occupy in developing countries, and how education and community development can help women gain agency. She also enjoys the aspect of gender studies that deals with the sociological and biological debates surrounding sex and gender, as well as how these debates are reflected in the legal system.

Her research at Vassar included how interracial marriage and parenting have shaped and been affected by U.S. law, as well as the effects of emigration on class mobility of women in South Korea. Her other interests include traveling; she has spent a lot of time in South Korea and Europe. She also enjoys art history, cooking and playing the harp.

Kathryn did study abroad this past summer in Leipzig, Germany, at the Erasmus Mundus Leipzig Summer Institute, She returned this fall to continue her research at UC Santa Barbara.
