SOUTH/SOUTHEAST ASIAUCSB South/Southeast Asia Workshop

The second workshop on religion in South and Southeast Asia.

UC-Santa Barbara, January 15, 2011.

This workshop expanded the conversation on religion in the region from India to adjacent Pakistan and Bangladesh and to the most populous Muslim country in the world, Indonesia. In each of these countries there has been a recent tendency towards the politicization of religion and efforts to make the ascription to religious beliefs more formal and rigid. This has put new pressure on the operations of international humanitarian organizations, especially those with a specific Christian identity. The approximately 30 participants at the workshop came from both university and humanitarian organization backgrounds.
