SOUTH/SOUTHEAST ASIADelhi Workshop

The in-country workshop on religion in South and Southeast Asia,
focusing on India

India International Centre, New Delhi, September 18, 2010

The Delhi Workshop focused primarily on India, with some attention to Pakistan and Bangladesh. Of critical interest was the rise of religious politics throughout the region, including the Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party in India and the Jama’at i-Islamiya in Pakistan and Bangladesh, and even more extreme religious terrorist movements to be found in every instance. These religiously political currents have affected civil society and the work of both home-grown NGOs and international NGOs, both secular and faith-based. The 25 participants in the workshop came from university, religious, and NGO quarters, and included participants from Bangladesh and Pakistan as well as India and the United States. The workshop was co-sponsored by the Orfalea Center and the Delhi-based Center for Social Development.
