PLANNING WORKSHOP

A workshop on the role of religion in the training of leaders in non-profit, non-government international organizations (international NGOs)

UC-Santa Barbara, January 18-19, 2008

This pre-project planning workshop was designed to identify some of the critical aspects of religion in public affairs that would be relevant to the subsequent workshops. It focused on areas of cultural conflict and sensitivity that confronted all international actors—but especially those in humanitarian organizations—working abroad. This workshop tested out the format that became standard for most of the subsequent workshops: a gathering of some twenty participants, half of them scholars in the area of religion and international affairs, and half of them professional international NGO leaders who have dealt with issues of religion. This provided a useful intersection of academic and practical points of view.
