LATIN AMERICA & THE CARIBBEANUCSB Latin America & the Caribbean Workshop

The second workshop on religion in Latin America and the Caribbean.

UC-Santa Barbara, January 16, 2010.

This workshop covered a variety of countries in the region, including Haiti, Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil, as well as Argentina. The role of the Church was again an aspect of the discussion, along with the role of faith-based humanitarian relief organizations that amassed in regions such as Haiti after disasters. Since the devastating earthquake in Haiti occurred shortly before the workshop began, this example weighed heavily on the minds of the discussants, especially those with a Haitian connection. Approximately thirty participants were involved, including both academics with expertise in Latin America or the Caribbean, and practitioners from international NGOs working in the region.
