MARK WOODWARD

Woodward received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has been on the faculty in Religious Studies at Arizona State University since 1985. He is currently Visiting Professor at the Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies at Gadjah Mada University and Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University in Yogyakarta Indonesia.

 

He is the author of Islam in Java: Normative Piety and Mysticism in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta (University of Arizona Press, 1989) and Java, Indonesia and Islam (Springer, 2010) and co-author (with Richard Martin and Dwi Atmaja) of Defenders of Reason in Islam. Mutazilism from Medieval School to Modern Symbol (One World, 1997). His research interest center on religion, politics and identity in Indonesia and Southeast Asia more generally.
