John (Jack) Fitzmier serves as the Executive Director of the American Academy of Religion. Prior to his work at the AAR he served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean at the Claremont School of Theology (1999-2005) and Associate Dean at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School (1989-1998). He attended the University of Pittsburgh (BS, 1973), Gordon Conwell Seminary (MDiv, summa cum laude, 1981) and Princeton University (MA, 1983; Ph.D., 1986). His scholarly interests are in the history of American religious thought from the Puritans through the mid-nineteenth century. He is the author of The Presbyterians (Greenwood, 1993 and 1994), with Professor Randall Balmer, and New England's Moral Legislator: Timothy Dwight, 1975-1817 (Indiana University Press, 1999). Fitzmier is currently working on a book-length manuscript about Samuel Miller (1769-1850) of Princeton, one of the nation's earliest and most prolific teachers of religion.
