Francesca Degiuli is
a Faculty Fellow in the Department of Global and
International
Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
She received her Ph.D. in
Sociology with an emphasis in Global Studies from UC Santa Barbara
in September 2007.
Previously, she studied history in Turin, Italy, historical documentary filmmaking
at George Washington University in Washington DC and worked in the film industry
before
returning to university to complete her doctorate.
Francesca’s research interests lie at the intersections of gender, globalization,
immigration and work, and are driven by broad questions about the
theoretical linkages between political economy and culture. Her dissertation, “Laboring
Lives: A Look at Transnational Work Practices: The Case of Eldercare Work
in Italy” is
an ethnographic study that expands on these interests. She has published
articles in journals such as
the European Journal of Women Studies, Work, Employment, and Society
and has a
chapter in the edited volume Labour, Globalisation, and the New Economy
edited by
Gyorgy Széll.
