Hello Professor Juergensmeyer!
I was reading through the Winter 2003 edition of Coastlines
Magazine and I saw that you had won the 2003 Grawemeyer Foundation
Award in religion for your book, Terror in the Mind of God.
Congratulations on winning this award! I remember reading
this two years ago and it was a powerful read. Now I would
argue that the words have an even greater impact as the US
and the world attempts to gain an understanding of terrorism
and understand the motivations behind terrorist attacks.
Life in the San Francisco Bay Area continues to treat me
well. I continue to work for a start-up software company in
San Francisco as a Support Engineer and my wife works as an
After School Program Director in Redwood City. We are thinking
about buying a home up here in the near future.
I was wondering if you would happen to know of any organizations
or contacts here in the Bay Area that deal with the global
issues (specifically terrorism) that were discussed in many
of your Global Studies lectures. The reason that I ask is
that I would like to get more involved and apply the knowledge
that I gained in my Global Studies classes.
Also, is the Global Studies Dept. keeping track of Global
Studies Alums? If so, I would like to start a group up here
for networking, discussion, and fun (if one does not already
exist). Would it be possible for you folks to send me any
contact information for Global Studies Grads living in the
Bay Area to get this started?
I hope that this email finds you well. Take care and I hope
to hear from you soon.

Response from Professor Mark Juergensmeyer:
Great to hear from you! I'm glad to hear that you are doing
so well. All of our grads are flourishing it seems, in many
different fields. With your permission I'd like to put your
note up on the alumni page of our website, www.global.ucsb.edu.
I'll send a copy of this to Chris Gregory on our staff who
does the website, and Jodi Cutler, who follows our alums.
Regarding groups in the bay area that are interested in global
issues: you should check out the World Affairs Council, a
community program series in int'l studies based in San Francisco
but with chapters, I believe, all over the Bay Area. It's
really a terrific group.
